The Bauhster

The purpose of the project was to explore a design period and the various design characteristics of the movement. These design techniques were to be translated into a cardboard prototype of a toasting device for a uniquely shaped conical piece of bread. The chosen design movement was Bauhaus (1920-30's), which emphasised geometric forms, simple colour palettes and minimal ornamentation.

Ideation Phase

With the Bauhaus movement in mind, different design ideas were explored through sketches. The final ideation that was chosen was the "Lunchbox Skewer Design". As the name implies, the exterior form resembles a lunchbox with a very minimalist and geometric design. The idea is for the design to operate like a toaster-oven, where the toast is placed inside on a turn-table, heating up when the lid is closed.

Prototyping

After selecting the design idea, the device was prototyped through corrugated cardboard. As the final product was to also be made from cardboard, it was determined that creating a net for the toaster's main body would be the most effective solution. Then additional parts such as the toasting turn-table and electronics compartment were created from the remaining cardboard. These steps are showcased through the photos in the slideshow.

Final Product

The final product was produced from a hi-fidelity white cardboard with 600gsm thickness. Although the net from the initial prototype remained the same, a few changes were made due to the difference in thickness and material. The scope of the project was to develop rapid prototyping skills through cardboard and hence did not require the construction of a functional toaster. However, if I were to continue to pursue the project, planning the various electronic components required, choosing the materials and colours of the toaster and potential manufacturing methods would likely be the next steps taken.
